My client was creating her very first children’s book for a target audience of elementary-aged kids. After reading the text and getting an overall feel of the book’s trajectory, I decided to go with watercolor illustrations.

Children that are just beginning to read simple sentences and diction tend to have an appeal for bright colors. I also wanted to create a “softer” aesthetic considering the story’s plot had to do with the key concepts of friendship and belonging.

I sketched multiple ideas of character art and took into consideration each character’s natural quality. For example; the character “Big Mountain” is indeed a mountain. Studying the rigidness and unwavering stature of mountains helped me to solidify the concept art for him, which resulted in a a purple-hued mountain with broad, yet defined edges. The hard edges of his figure in addition to his size really cement the idea of a solid figure, whilst his color palette and humble, slightly jagged smile showcase the image of a warm father-figure.

After illustrating all 24 pages of the book, including the front and back cover art, and editing their color output in Photoshop (RGB to CMYK transition), I formatted each page via Adobe InDesign for proper page layout. This included aligning the text and creating a proper grid system for each page to allow for better legibility, implementing the proper bleed and slug for cleaner pages, and exporting each page into different file types for publishing (i.e. pdf and svg).

Once the final product was delivered, we had the wonderful opportunity to share our book at an independent school called Wildwood school in West Los Angeles as apart of their Read-A-Thon week. As of November 2024, the school has the book in their library, and it is available for purchase online via Amazon and the Good Ones Publishing Co.
